This is a bit off topic but I'll try to turn it around in the end.

Most of the software I use is not exactly kosher in that I am either using a cracked copy (WinZip) or I'm working with shareware that I've never registered in two years (See next paragraph).

I've been thinking quite a bit about Chris' posts on Lockergnome about supporting shareware authors and that freeware isn't always free. In particular I was thinking about Power Desk from OnTrack. I've used this Windows Explorer replacement at work for almost two years and never thought twice about registering it. I could put up with the infrequent nag screens reminding me how many times I've open it. I could ignore the banner link at the bottom of the window with a link to OnTrack. It got so that I didn't even think about it anymore because the demo was so great and there was no time limit! I could use it forever and a day rent free.

Here's the big tie in to GnomeDex. I told you it was coming. I got to thinking about all the people I would meet at GD and all the SHAREWARE developers who would be there as well. How could I look them in the eye and not feel a twinge of guilt when I shook there hand and gladly accepted their software when I had no intention of doing the right thing?

Well it all boils down to this. I've decided to register all the shareware that I use on a regular basis. To that end I am the proud owner of a fully registered (not cracked) version of Power Desk Pro! Its a small step but ya gotta start somewhere.

Are you proud of me now Ma!? Huh? What about the cracked version of WinZip? Hmm...I'm thinking about it.

Happy Trails

Chris
